8/5/14: Man of Steel (2013)

What's it all about?

Man of Steel is the origin story of the world's first superhero, Superman. On the planet Krypton, Robin Hood (Jor-El, whatever)'s son is the first natural birth in hundreds of years. Meanwhile, the planet is kinda falling apart, so Jor sends little baby Kal-El to earth to escape the destruction of their home world, along with the DNA of every future Kryptonian stuffed into baby Kal's cells. He lands in Kansas and becomes Clark Kent, son of Jonathan Kent (Also Robin Hood, funny how things work out) and grows up there. He is different, being an alien and all and is not well liked as a child. As an adult, after living all over the place, finds an old Kryptonian base-thingy for scouting out habitable worlds and there learns who he is and why he's here. Now, this alerts the bad guys from back when Krypton was in one piece and they come to earth for the Codex stuck inside Superman/Kent/Kal-El's cells. There's a huge fight to save the world from them trying to terraform the Earth into New Krypton and after a lot of punching and yelling and laser eyes, Superman snaps their leader, General Zod's neck. Everyone is happy and safe and Kal-El/Clark gets a job as a reporter for the city's newspaper. Ending credits, lots of cool stuff.

How was the plot?

Recently, for some reason, lots of heroes are getting their origin stories told through new movies. Captain America, Thor, Batman, Spiderman (twice), Green lantern, and now Superman too have gotten origin story movies in the last fifteen years. While we all know the stories for all of these guys, there's something to be said for a new take with the newest, best updated CGI and LOUD NOISES. I especially liked Man of Steel because there was LOTS of action packed fight scenes and just enough actual plot stuff to keep it interesting. Also, I just love how Kal-El remembered to put his underwear INSIDE his pants in this newest version of the Superman-suit, sporting the newest version of the symbol for the House of El. All in all, the plot was very good, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Soundtrack?

Hallelujah. I LOVE a good movie with an excellent set of background music.  Hans Zimmer really outdid himself with this one, with the perfect balance between subtle, quiet stuff and super-intense music during super-intense scenes. Yowza. the Man of Steel soundtrack is one of my favourite things on my iPod. Me gusta mucho.

Final review?

Excellent movie. I'd give it a solid A, 96%. Well done!
